Meet minimum English language requirements - Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band) for eligibility, but higher scores earn more points for competitive advantage
Minimum 65 points on skilled migration points test - Calculate points from age, English, work experience, education, and partner skills to meet threshold
Health examinations and character checks mandatory - Medical exams valid for 12 months, police certificates from all countries lived 12+ months since age 16
Nominated occupation must be on relevant skills list - MLTSSL for 189, additional options on STSOL/ROL for state nominated and regional visas
Work experience requirements vary by visa stream - Generally need 1-3 years relevant experience, with Australian experience valued higher than overseas

Which permanent work visa is easiest to get?

"Easy" doesn't exist in Australian immigration. But here's the truth: Employer sponsorship (186) has the most places and clearest path. Already in Australia on a temporary work visa? The Temporary Residence Transition stream is your smoothest route. No skills assessment needed, just functional English.

Can I switch visas while waiting for permanent residency?

Yes, but carefully. Most people stay on temporary visas (student, work, visitor) using bridging visas between them. The new SID visa gives you more flexibility - up to 180 days between employers without losing status. Just maintain lawful status throughout. One overstay can wreck your PR dreams.

What if I'm over 45 years old?

Not completely locked out, but options shrink dramatically. National Innovation Visa (858) has no age limit for exceptional talent. ENS 186 offers exemptions if you earn above high-income threshold or work as a medical practitioner in regional areas. Otherwise, Partner visas or investment routes might work better.

Do I really need to live in regional areas for regional visas?

Absolutely. No shortcuts. Subclass 491 requires 3 years in designated regional areas before accessing 191 permanent visa. Good news is that "Regional" includes Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast - hardly the outback. Plus you can move between regional areas freely. Just can't touch Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane.
